I've been working on a project for a special little lady, and decided to take some bits from it to make this pattern. Kinda fun, right?

A Little Giveaway

As a thank you for reading this blog, I have decided that it's time to host a little giveaway! I am still convinced that most of my followers and readers are either spam or family members, and I am not saying that family is at all like spam, just to clarify!

So here's the deal: I will send a framed print of one of my patterns (US addresses only) to the winner. In the comments, leave me an idea for a fun pattern by Valentine's Day (2/14), and you are entered to win. I will pick my favorite and try to even make a pattern from the winning comment at some point in the coming year!

Happy weekend, y'all!

PS-The winner will get to pick what print they would like from a small selection of my patterns.

Leafy Pattern

Leaf pattern by Emily Laurel Harris, 2011

During Milton Glaser's class this summer, he emphasized the importance of drawing and how many people in the age of the computer don't really know how to draw. Since the class,
I have really been trying to create more by hand and do things off of the computer. My mom and I have been drawing together for the past few Sundays, and this sketch was done one glorious fall afternoon in the backyard. I then took it into the computer and turned it into a pattern. It is just so satisfying to work with simple materials like a pencil and an ink pen every once and a while.

Patterns on Pillows!

This evening I was tinkering around in Photoshop and decided to test some of my patterns on pillows, lampshades, etc. Here are the results, and now I am kind of wishing I hadn't done this because I oh so badly want to make pillows immediately!

New Pattern: Origami

As I was working on this pattern, it unintentionally began to look like Origami. I have always loved the colorful, patterned papers and that a few folds could turn a flat piece of paper into an intricate, three dimensional object.

Dairy Queen Cone Pattern

DQ cone pattern by Emily Laurel Harris, 2011
It's National Ice Cream month, so to celebrate I am going to make some ice cream patterns. I thought I would start with one of my favorites, the Dairy Queen cone. DQ began here in the good old Midwest and nothing says summer like one of their cones, they are delightful!

Inspiration: Fired Earth Tiles

Yes, I have fallen behind on my 30 Birdies project, but I am working on it and hope to catch up soon! In the meantime, I found these pretty tiles on the Kris Atomic blog. Aren't they beautiful?

Inspiration: Spring Patterns

The weather has been relatively mild, we've had lots of sun, and I've been out walking every day this week. I think it's fairly safe to say that the worst of winter is finally behind us! Bring on spring! I have been looking for some good ideas for new patterns, as I haven't made one in quite some time. Patina is always bursting with ideas and when I stopped in this weekend, it did not disappoint. Below are just a few bits of inspiration I found...

Inspiration: Penguin Classics Redesigned

I was browsing through my most favorite blog/source for inspiration, The Apple and the Egg, the other day when I came across these Penguin Classics redesigned. Aren't they lovely? I of course love the use of color and pattern! They were all designed by Ian Bilbey, who has quite the portfolio.

This one is totally channeling Marimekko.

I could never get into the Little House on the Prairie books, but I am loving this cover.

Inspiration: Marimekko

Marimekko is currently having their BIG sale, where many thing are deeply discounted. Most of it is still too spendy for me, but there are some gorgeous pieces and lots of eye candy! Check it out here. Below are some of my favorite finds from their treasure troves...

This pattern is one of my all time favorites, it's such a classic and works so well in black.

It is also quite lovely in pink.

I heart these trees, I wish I could make some pillows with this fabric.

And this one? Um, yum! I wish I could make my patterns look this delicious!

Pattern: Cats!

So I am not really a cat person, I grew up with dogs and LOVE them very much. I can't wait to get a pup of my own. However, M came with a cat so that posed a bit of a dilemma. He was too good to let go, so I welcomed them both into my life. Said cat took some getting used to, but we have learned to love each other (once she stopped stalking my head when I was sleeping). I do kind of wish we could have a purple cat though, how fun would that be?!

Pattern: Breakfast!

Inspired by all of the good food I ate this past weekend, I imagine the bacon in this pattern to be of the turkey variety, as I don't eat pork. What are your favorite breakfast foods?

Pattern: Cupcakes!

Here's a sweet little treat, how I wish I had a real cupcake right now! Chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting? Yes, please! What is your favorite kind of cupcake?

Happy Father's Day!

I spent a great day with my Dad. We went out to breakfast and then I took him to a vintage motorcycle gathering. While motorcycles aren't exactly my thing, Dad had a blast and that's what it's all about right? I did snap a few photos of some things I found inspiring:

Nice Type

Love the hand drawn elements.

I like the logo and colors on this one.

Isn't this guy the best?! I had to post two photos because he was just SO cute!

LOVE dogs that can rock the goggles!

I am so lucky to have such a fantastic father, thanks for spending the day with me!

Pattern: Strawberry Fields

It has been way too long since I last posted a pattern. This one is different and a bit crazier than usual, but I think it's working? I made it in anticipation of going to pick strawberries with my mom this summer-it's so much fun!
