On My Bookshelf: Ed Emberley's Big Orange Drawing Book

Hello! I have another fun little Halloween goodie to share with you, Ed Emberley's Big Orange Drawing Book. Copyright 1980, published by Little, Brown and Company. As I have mentioned before, I am a big Ed Emberley fan, so this instructional Halloween drawing book was an exciting find. I love how his books show every single step of the process, as I am a total nerd for diagrams. His drawings are so simple, yet charming and in this case, perfectly capture the spirit of Halloween.

Inspiration: The Work of Blanca Gomez

A dear friend sent me these city illustrations by Blanca Gómez, a designer and illustrator from Madrid. The style looked familiar and after some googling I realized she did a cover for Uppercase magazine, which is fantastic, by the way. Her website is full of goodies, and she has a blog, as well as an Etsy shop. Me thinks I need some new art to hang on the walls of my new home!

On My Bookshelf: All Things Spooky

I love Halloween, I love witches (the pointy black hat, broom is primary mode of transportation kind), and I love all things weird like Charles Addams. So today I share with you two little gems from my collection, all thanks to my mom and her stealth ebay skills.

First, Dorrie and the Blue Witch by Patricia Coombs, copyright 1964. Published by Lothrop, Lee and Shepard Co., Inc.
I loved these books when I was young. There are many stories about the little witch, but they are rather hard to come by these days.

And I love Charles Addams, I always wanted to live with the Addam's Family (totally weird, right?). All of Mr. Addam's cartoons for the New Yorker are genius. So you can imagine my excitement when my mom presented me with this wacky take on nursery rhymes, just my style!

The Charles Addams Mother Goose, copyright 1967. Published by Windmill Books, Inc. Distributed by Harper & Row

Good Night

I just got home from a mind numbing design lecture and I am finding myself too tired to post my daily pattern (or anything else for that matter). More tomorrow. Sweet dreams!

Bond Collection

I meant to post about these a while ago, but forgot until I saw them on FaceOut Books this evening. Not only that, but there is an interesting interview with Michael Gillette, the designer and illustrator. I really like the hand drawn type, and the ladies-ooo the ladies! Aren't these great?! I love how they capture the essence of a Bond Girl!

Redesigns & Weekend Recap.

So another weekend (sadly) comes to a close. Overall, it was pretty decent. I made some amazingly tasty lasagna and had a lovely Valentine's dinner eating said dish with my man and parents. I received some lovely flowers (pink Gerbera daisies, yellow Snap Dragons & Stargazer Lilies), stumbled upon an amazing noodle restaurant (a new favorite!) with a good friend while trying to find an AIGA website launch party. The party? Not the best, but great tunes and PBR tall boys made up for it. Good times were had by all.

I thought I would post some interesting designs I came across while surfing the internets this weekend.

Designer Spacesick of Ohio made these awesome vintage-looking book covers based on famous movies. I LOVE these! I think Ghost Dad and Mean Girls are two of my favorites. So fun. Check out the whole collection on his blog. What a great idea, they truly look vintage!

Another fun find I came across through Daily Discoveries on Design, are these Harry Potter cover redesigns by illustrator M.S. Corley. I am a HUGE HP fan and really love the artwork/covers of the original books, so I was completely curious when I found these because they are amazingly different. They have such a sophistication/Peguin-esque feel to them. Redesigns are always such a challenge (at least for me) because I always find it difficult to work on something that has already been created. I get stuck on the original and have trouble moving past ideas from the previous design.

I think I am liking the Half Blood Prince cover the best from this set, but the Philospher's Stone is a close second.

That's all I've got for now, enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
